Why Use Technology in Language Instruction? This is a featured page

Today's students expect to be engaged in their learning with interactive lessons. Today's teacher is finding that a lecture is not an effective tool in the classroom. Students in classes where the the instruction is provided via lecture or textbook quickly shut down.

Today's teachers are finding it challenging to address all of the standards - content area, technology, etc. and the Michigan High School graduation requirements. There is not enough time to teach skills or content in isolation, it has become essential to combine standards in one lesson or activity. This is possible by integrating Web 2.0 technologies into the curriculum.

Our tech-savvy students, who have never known life without the Internet, use these new tools daily, but mostly outside of school. The Partnership for 21st Century Skills has stated, “Today’s education system faces irrelevance unless we bridge the gap between how students live and how they learn.” When students use 21st Century technologies, they are able to meet their intrinsic needs to form communities, ask questions, and earn audience and attention. Today’s students will spend their adult lives in a multitasking, technology-driven, diverse world, and they must arrive equipped to do so.

Not only does integration help the educator but it also allows students to use the tools they are comfortable using outside of the school setting to learn in school. Students don't have to "power down" when they walk into the building and they quickly discover that the learning process isn't confined to the areas within the school walls.

Technologies, especially Web 2.0 tools,
  • Engage students in the learning process
  • Enhance instruction
  • Increase achievement and motivation
  • Differentiate instruction for diverse learners
  • Accommodate different learning styles
  • Allow students to learn anywhere, anytime

“In a 21st-century learning environment, all students are able to learn. Project-based learning allows students to acquire 21st-century skills in the context of real-world scenarios, and the integration of video and other media to support instruction links students with outside resources and enables teachers to address many learning styles at once. In fact, the 21st-century learning environment doesn’t just wait for teachable moments; it literally creates them at will.”
